About Me
Growing Up
I was born and raised in Richland, WA. and graduated from Columbia High School (now Richland HS) in '68.
While growing up my folks owned a small farm near West Richland on the Yakima River. We had horses, cows, and other animals and grew about 6 acres of alfalfa for the live stock. We used the horses for elk hunting, always had dogs for bird hunting, camped and fished a lot. I think the most interesting thing I did when younger was boxing. I boxed for the Tri-Cities Boxing Club. I made it to the final bout for the Golden Gloves Championship in Spokane, WA but lost to a resident of the Walla Walla State Penitentiary...badly.
The Navy
A year after graduating from high school I joined the Navy and served four years as a radioman. I attended boot camp and Radioman "A" School in San Diego, spent a year at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, a year on Midway Island, and the final year and a half on the Destroyer Escort USS Knox and
Destroyer USS Morton which were both home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During my last 8 months of service I made a WestPac cruise which included stops in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, but, we spent most of our time off the coast of North and South Viet Nam.
Post Navy
Having survived the Navy I bummed around for a year doing odd jobs. I had enough savings to buy a motorcycle and purchased a brand new 750cc Triumph. I enjoyed riding around the northwest for the next ten years on that motorcycle. I eventually chopped it, which was a major project, but quit riding in 1981 after my second child was born.
I am married and have five children, all grown, several grand kids, and one great-granddaughter; all of whom my wife and I thoroughly enjoy.
Things I like
Although I had quit riding back in 1981 I had never lost my love for riding. After the kids moved away and were on their own I purchased a Harley FLSTF in 2003. I’ve been riding since then. I've been to all 50 states and all the provinces of Canada on a motorcycle. My longest trips were to Key West, Florida; Labrador, Newfoundland; and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
In the fall I'm either glued to TV on Saturday or at Husky Stadium as I am a big fan of Husky Football; about the only sport I follow regularly.
Other Things I like
- Golf
- Mexican food
- Music (all kinds)
- Guitar
Teaching
My mother was a teacher and I had several teachers who inspired me so I chose teaching as a career.
I’ve taught continuously since 1978 where I started as an Industrial Arts teacher in Mabton, WA. After a year there I moved to Kiona-Benton HS and taught Industrial Arts for ten years. In 1988 I was hired at Kamiakin HS as a Technology Education teacher. I spent five years here then moved to Horse Heaven Hills Middle School for ten years. I've been back at Kamiakin since 2003 and plan to stay until I retire.
I love teaching and cannot think of a job I would prefer.
